Dewmini

She Creates Change is a six-part docu-series by Nexus Studios, created in collaboration with global charity, Room to Read to spotlight their important work. Spearheaded by Emmy-winner Martha Adams, each episode was directed by a collective of diverse women curated by Nexus Studios. The episodes are comprised of an animated short featuring the narratives of six courageous young women from historically low-income communities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam, and feature voiceovers from world-class talent such as Freida Pinto and Charithra Chandran. Directed by Oscar and Annie-nominated Director, Siqi Song, “Dewmini” follows the eponymous protagonist in her home in rural Sri Lanka. Recently, severe droughts have led to scarce food supplies with families all over the country being forced to make tough decisions. With limited options, Dewmini’s family decide to accept an offer for her to work in the city as a domestic worker. They hate to split the family apart, but they know that in the city she’d at least have enough to eat. Yet, Dewmini believes there must be another way. Driven by her determination, guided by her intelligence, and culminating in a moment of inspiration, she develops and builds an ingenious irrigation system to grow food in the family’s garden. With enough food to eat, Dewmini can stay with her family. “Dewmini" explores important themes pertaining to sustainability, wildlife, water and food scarcity. The film captivates its audience with beautiful stop-motion animation, imaginative visual metaphors, and heartwarming characters.
